The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team opened with three straight goals and went on to beat DuPage 5-2 on a breezy Wednesday afternoon at Kleine Field for its second victory in a row.

The Chargers (3-9-1 overall, 3-5-1 Region IV) have scored five goals in consecutive games while recording their first back-to-back wins of the season.

Sandburg struck early, as Mike Pavon (Galveston, Texas/Willis) found a wide-open Tumelo Matebesi (Pretoria, South Africa/Willowridge) in the middle of the field, and Matebesi’s shot to the left post made it 1-0 in the third minute.

The Chargers made it 2-0 in the fifth minute when Luis Juarez (Willis, Texas/Willis) made a long throw-in that Pavon headed in. A Juarez throw-in also led to the Chargers’ third goal, as Erick Suarez (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) took a right-footed shot in the box for a 3-0 advantage in the 33rd minute.

The Chapparals (5-8, 5-8) got on the board in the 44th minute to make it a 3-1 game at halftime, but Matebesi added his second goal of the game with another blast to the left side in the 58th minute. The two-goal effort was Matebesi’s second in a row and third this season.

A DuPage header in the 60th minute made it 4-2, but Sandburg’s back line held strong the rest of the way. The Chargers put the game away in the 81st minute as Grego Massengo (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) chipped a shot from close range that found its way over the DuPage keeper for the final score.

Matebesi and Massengo each had four shots on goal for Sandburg, which totaled 13 in the match.

The Chargers will look for their third straight win as they travel to face Richard J. Daley at 1 p.m. Saturday in another Region IV contest.
